CHURCH TAKES FUNDRAISING LEAD

A national charity is calling on churches across Yorkshire to follow the lead of a Rotherham congregation who are working together to help local disabled and terminally ill children.

Members of Herringthorpe United Reformed Church, in Wickersley Road, are prolific fundraisers – and have recently turned their attentions to Newlife the Charity for Disabled Children, which has supported more than 400 under-19s in South Yorkshire alone.

The church’s minister the Rev Matt Stone said: “We support charities as a key part of our mission to show God’s love to our community and the wider world. It gives us a great opportunity to be a blessing to others, as well as to bring people together in and outside the church as we raise money for them.”

The church will be working with Newlife’s Regional Fundraising and Awareness Manager for Yorkshire Caroline Artschan to develop fundraising activities. The next event will be ‘An Evening with Rock Choir’ at the church on Saturday 18 March. Tickets are £5 each and are available at the church, either in advance or on the door.

Caroline Artschan said: “Newlife supports dozens of families of disabled and terminally ill children in the South Yorkshire area through a series of specialist equipment services, providing items like wheelchairs, walking frames, portable hoists and communication aids.

“We also guarantee that every penny fundraised in South Yorkshire will be spent in the area; the charity’s own social enterprise business underwrites core costs to ensure this. I am delighted to be liaising with Herringthorpe United Reformed Church and its members, who work tirelessly to help good causes like ours. Their support will help transform the lives of local disabled children and their families.”

She added: “I would love to hear from any other church or social organisations in the county which think they might be able to help, as Newlife is currently working with 13 families in the South Yorkshire area, with equipment needs totalling more than £23,000.”

Caroline Artschan can be contacted on 07534 491 933.

Newlife has supported 402 families across South Yorkshire, with equipment totalling £368,007. To find out more about the charity’s work in the area, go to www.newlifecharity.co.uk/southyorkshire.
