Cult TV Star Backs Newlife’s Weekend Spectacular

A thriving Cannock charity has attracted celebrity backing after offering local people the chance to bag a bargain and raise funds for disabled children. Newlife is hosting a £1 Weekend Sale where jeans, underwear, men’s suit style trousers and jackets, women and children’s wear and accessories will be sold. Anthony Head, star of Merlin, Little Britain and Buffy applauded the event which will see all profits being used to buy essential equipment for disabled children. And the first 100 people to attend the event each day will get a free pair of jeans. Anthony thinks the £1 Weekend Sale is a “genius idea” and said: “Raising funds for disabled children is enormously important as there are times when people do not meet the criteria for traditional funding. If they can’t then the only thing they can do is turn to Newlife. Since most people can afford £1 for a pair of jeans or some clothes, this is a great way of raising awareness of the plight of people with disabilities.” The event has also attracted the support of Anthony’s partner and animal expert Sarah Fisher who said: “Life throws enough challenges at us all but living with a disability can lead to increased isolation and limit potential. This is part of a really great project and we are proud to support Newlife.” Their daughter, Daisy, is also behind the event and said: “The £1 Weekend Sale is incredibly important. It is a brilliantly simple idea and a great way of giving something small that will be of great benefit to others.” As cutbacks hit provision of equipment through statutory services more families turn to Newlife for vital equipment. The event was announced after scores of high-street retailers donated thousands of pairs of jeans and other items to Newlife. Newlife chief executive Sheila Brown said: “We currently have 179 children waiting for equipment and need to raise £457,958 so this £1 sale will help them and spread a little cheer in gloomy financial times for hard-pressed families. The money raised will provide vital equipment for disabled children and fund research into child health.” The sale will take place on Saturday 18th September and Sunday 19th September, 10am to 4pm, at Newlife Temporary Warehouse, Online Business Park, Watling Street, Bridgtown, Cannock, WS11 0LR.
