FAMILY BECOME ‘NEWLIFE HEROES’ TO HELP OTHER CHILDREN

When Wednesbury nine-year-old Kenzy Jones received a specialist bed from Newlife the Charity for Disabled Children, his family decided to become ‘Newlife Heroes’ themselves and held a fundraising day to help other disabled children’s families through the charity.

Kenzy has severe autism, doesn’t speak and has epilepsy and learning difficulties, so he has no awareness of danger and can’t be left alone in a standard bed. A £6,110 bed known as a SafeSpace was provided by Newlife when his local statutory services refused. Kenzy and his family are now sleeping safe and sound knowing he is not in danger.

Kenzy’s parents, Kyla Carpenter-Jones and Kiy Carpenter-Jones, have raised £722 to help disabled and terminally ill children in the West Midlands through an event held at the Brunswick Arms pub on Crankhall Lane, Wednesbury.

There was fun for all the family with live music, karaoke, barbecue, ice cream van, car boot sale, auction, donkey rides for youngsters and psychic readings by Lynne Morgan, who donated her services for the day. Sponsored events on the day also included a head shave – with brave family friend Sarah-Ann Costin shaving off her shoulder length locks to help boost the fundraising total.

Kyla said: “We just wanted to do something to say thank you to Newlife for their help and the whole community has stepped in to help us fundraise. Every shop in Crankhall Lane has contributed something – especially Mac Mills who owns the Brunswick Arms.

“Around 60 people came on the day, so it was very busy. It was an amazing day and everyone had fun, even Kenzy came down and enjoyed it. We are so grateful to everyone who helped us organise this day and for everyone who came.”

Meredith Lambert, Midlands Fundraising and Awareness Manager said: “At Newlife we are so grateful to Kyla and Kiy for all their hard work and to the local community coming together to help make this fundraising day such a great event! Every penny raised will help change and save the lives of children with disabilities or terminal illness across the county.”

Right now there are 55 children in the West Midlands with equipment needs of £35,490.
