FAMILY TAKE ON SPORTING CHALLENGE TO SAY THANK YOU AND HELP OTHER CHILDREN

The parents of a Manchester seven-year-old have taken on a 10k sporting challenge to raise money for the charity which has provided their daughter with vital mobility equipment.

A couple from Greater Manchester took part in the recent Wigan 10km to raise funds for a leading children’s disability charity as a way to say thank you for the funding, earlier this year, of a specialist buggy for their seven-year-old daughter, Macy, who they pushed along the route.

Kevin and Debra McKiernan took part in the recent Wigan 10k in a bid to raise much-needed funds for leading UK children’s disability charity Newlife Foundation. Newlife helped to provide Macy with a specialist buggy to accommodate her needs as she continues to grow.

Now they are hoping to raise the same amount of money for Newlife so the charity can help another family in need.

Macy has a diagnosis of West Syndrome, a type of epilepsy with results in daily seizures, as well as having delays in her development which includes not being able to talk. The youngster is unsteady when she walks and is often sleepy after her seizures.

Macy’s specialist buggy not only provides her with a safe way of getting around, it reclines to allow her to sleep after a seizure and is also able to cope with different terrains – which allows Macy, her parents and two siblings, Sinead and Ryan, to enjoy family time together including exploring their local woodland.

Thrilled with the difference the chair has made to Macy, her dad Kevin said: “Newlife helped us fund our child’s chair and we wanted to say thank you and give back to help someone else. We also plan to make taking part in the Wigan 10km an annual family event now.

“It was quite an emotional day for us – a day we won’t forget. It was great to be able to support Newlife. We have raised £460 so far but we are hoping to raise more to go towards paying for someone else’s wheelchair.”

Newlife has awarded 188 Equipment Grants in the Greater Manchester area so far totalling £204,582.

Newlife guarantees that 100 per cent of all monies donated or fundraised in the Greater Manchester can be ring-fenced to specifically provide equipment for disabled and terminally ill children within the area. Any individual or organisation thinking of running a fundraising event is asked to contact the team, who can offer support and guidance.
