HELP MAKE A DIFFERENCE TO TERMINALLY ILL CHILDREN AND THEIR FAMILIES

Carrick Brown, services manager for Newlife’s equipment loan services, is showing his commitment to the cause by running the London Marathon on Sunday, April 26, to raise money for the charity which helps disabled, terminally ill and life-limited children across the UK.

When Carrick isn’t in the office he’s training hard for the 26.2 mile marathon which has a route winding around the capital, clocking up around 12 miles throughout the week with longer runs at the weekend – currently around 17 miles – but with a few more months to practice he is confident his hard work will pay off on the big day.

“I have run a couple of half marathons before for Newlife – but I wouldn’t class myself as particularly healthy or fit. This is totally outside my comfort zone! I’m not sure what I’ve let myself in for, but I’m really looking forward to the atmosphere on the day and I know that I’m running for a great cause and the money I raise will make a difference to so many children and their families.

“The difficulties and fear faced by families of disabled and terminally ill children put any problems completing the marathon into perspective. The strength shown by parents across the UK will give this parent of two the strength to see the finish line.”

Although the minimum amount of sponsorship runners are asked to raise is £2,500, Carrick is hoping to double that for Newlife – and as 100 per cent of all fundraising can be restricted when it is donated to the charity, Carrick is supporting Newlife’s latest free pilot service, Comfort Capsules.

Aimed at helping families with terminally ill children build and treasure memories, Newlife Comfort Capsules have been created in partnership with palliative care professionals, with each capsule containing a range of carefully chosen items to meet the emotional needs of families at this difficult time, giving them the chance to soothe their child and create special memories together which they can cherish forever.

Each of the free comfort capsules in the pilot service contains items which can support the whole family, such as supportive V-pillows and super soft, comfy blankets which can be used to keep parent and child snug and supported for cuddles, while a memory box, camera and digital photograph frame can capture and preserve precious moments.

Carrick adds: “Newlife recognises that providing equipment can have a therapeutic effect on a child’s quality of life and support the family as a whole. This is why we are offering the loan of a capsule which will contain age and culturally sensitive resources which the families can hold onto as long as they need to.”

To support Carrick and help him raise vital funds for Newlife, you can donate directly to his justgiving page at https://www.justgiving.com/Carrick-Brown2/

A request for a Comfort Capsule must be made by a healthcare professional on behalf of the family to the Newlife nurses who can be contacted free from a UK landline on 0800 902 0095 or on 01543 468 400.
