HULL PARENTS ASK FOR HELP

Layton got the specialised car seat he needed to enable his family to take him to important hospital appointments safely. Now his family are asking the people of the East Riding of Yorkshire to help local children with disabilities or terminal illness today.

Right now there are four children in the East Riding of Yorkshire who urgently need equipment. Newlife Foundation, the UK’s largest charity funder of specialist equipment, needs £5,910 to help these children.

Newlife has helped 102 children in the East Riding of Yorkshire through equipment grants and loans totalling £115,626, so the charity knows there is a very real need for a specific county fund. In this way it aims to help more children, more quickly.

The four-year-old is a wheelchair user, with cerebral palsy affecting all four limbs and epilepsy. He had outgrown his current car seat which did not give him the posture support that was important.

“Newlife provided a new car seat which was fitted last week,” said mum Danielle who was delighted. “The specialist seat is ideal for Layton’s needs – in this one he sits correctly with his head upright.

“He could not be left alone in the back of the car in his seat. It needed another person to travel with us and keep him upright. That was not always possible and we have important journeys like hospital visits to make.”

The specialist car seat cost £1,099 and the family from Hull turned to Newlife for help after failing to find funding elsewhere.

The Newlife East Riding of Yorkshire Fund supports equipment provision for under-19s facing any significant disability, whether acquired through birth defect, prematurity, accident or illness.

Layton’s family are encouraging local people to support the recently launched fund to provide specialist equipment for children with disabilities or terminal illness in East Yorkshire.

Vitally, the Newlife East Riding of Yorkshire Fund website – www.newlifecharity.co.uk/eastridingofyorkshire – will enable local people to find out who needs help in their area right now and highlight the support the charity gives vulnerable families. It includes contact details for the Newlife County Liaison Team – telephone 01543 431 444 or email local@newlifecharity.co.uk – and shows specific ways people can help support children with disability and terminal illness and their families.

That might involve taking part in a local sporting challenge, give you information on how to organise a fundraising event – or even ask you to donate £5 today. Volunteers are also needed to help raise awareness of what we do and how we do it.

We hope that by launching the Newlife East Riding of Yorkshire Fund, children with disabilities or terminal illness in the county won’t have to go without the equipment they need for everyday life.

Newlife Foundation supports families in the East Riding of Yorkshire through a range of free services: Nurse-staffed helpline Equipment grants Emergency equipment loans Sensory and developmental toy ‘pod’ loans.
