Katie Battle used to work as part of a children’s disability team. So, when her daughter Elsie was born with sensory driven apnoea and requiring oxygen 24 hours a day, she knew where to turn for help.
Katie, from Tile Cross in Birmingham, said: “I used to refer people to Newlife Foundation for Disabled Children in my professional capacity so I knew the organisation could potentially help Elsie too. I asked for a grant for a suitable profiling cot – and I was offered Newlife’s Just Can’t Wait service so that we could get the equipment straight away; we also knew Elsie wouldn’t be in the cot for long before she would require a larger bed.”
Two-year-old Elsie needed a specialist cot so she could sleep in a tilted position to reduce the risk of reflux and to facilitate use of an overnight controlled ventilation system (BiPAP).
Katie said: “I was offered a normal adult-sized hospital bed by statutory services, which was clearly not suitable for a young child. Having the specialist cot means Elsie is safe at night and the fact that it tilts is fantastic, especially if she is coughing a lot or generally unwell. Elsie absolutely loves her cot; it is her special space and it is big enough for her to roll around in, yet safe enough so she can’t roll out.
“The cot has definitely aided Elsie’s development. Because it helps make use of the BiPAP machine much easier, her daily life is not being affected as much.”
Katie added: “The cot – which also raises up and down – is a huge help to me as well, as I have a condition that means I have hyper-mobile joints which made leaning into a standard cot to put on her BiPAP mask very difficult. Before I had the specialist cot from Newlife on one occasion I dislocated my hip while leaning into her cot to put Elsie’s mask on.”
Elsie’s cot was provided through Newlife Foundation’s Just Can’t Wait (JCW) – an emergency equipment loan service for families of life-limited children. JCW aims to deliver specialist wheelchairs, buggies, beds, seating systems and hoists, within 72 hours, direct to families’ homes anywhere in the UK.
Newlife Equipment Loan Services Manager Carrick Brown said: “We are responding to the increased demand for this service. Ongoing investment and expansion of the suite of equipment enables us to offer support to more families during times of increasing statutory cuts, transition of needs – for instance when a child’s prognosis is uncertain – or as a stopgap while waiting for provision of equipment on a permanent basis.”
