Newlife Foundation Lead Nurse Karen Dobson will be discussing disability ‘hot topics’ during today’s Mother and Baby magazine Wednesday Lunch Club Facebook chat.

Karen – who is a Registered General Nurse with experience in paediatrics, midwifery, neonatal baby care and community nursing – has headed up the Newlife Foundation nurse team for 11 years. Her team staff the Newlife Nurse Helpline, offering information, guidance and support to families and health professionals on a range of disability issues.

Karen is responsible for developing Newlife’s equipment grant service and has seen it grow from providing £37,000 of aids in 2005 to last year’s total of £1.5m. In addition, she is involved with Newlife’s Just Can’t Wait emergency equipment loan service, which has supported more than 100 families of life-limited children.

Hot topics to be discussed in today’s Wednesday Lunch Club will include the difficulties families face in getting an assessment and provision of essential equipment. Karen will explain how Newlife offers practical support to families of disabled and terminally ill children through provision of specialist aids and how Newlife Nurses can provide information on conditions and plug families in to key national services.
