TELFORD LIONS CLUB HELPS KEEP LOCAL GIRL SAFE

Telford Lions Club has donated more than £1,200 to help the family of a disabled local girl.

With its donation of £1,277, the club is helping to fund a specialist car seat for a four-year-old in Shrewsbury, through leading UK children’s disability charity Newlife Foundation.

Newlife, which is based in Staffordshire, is the current charity partner for the 60 clubs and 1,000 members in Lions Club District 105BS, of which Telford is a part.

Telford Lions Club Community Services Chairman Clive Elcock said: “We like to support our community and when we heard that a local child needed help we were glad to step forward. Telford Lions Club organises a variety of fundraising activities throughout the year – our biggest event being our Wheels Day in Bowering Park in Wellington each July. This started off around 20 years ago as a show of old cars and trucks but over the years has grown to become a great family day out, with lots of entertainment for children too. Community support for this event – and many others – enables us to give something back.

“We are delighted to know that 100 per cent of our donation will be helping to secure a vulnerable child’s safety.”

Newlife Fundraising Manager Nora Smith said: “We are fortunate to have the support of this Lions Clubs district – and we put every penny of their donations to good use, providing essential equipment for disabled and terminally ill children. This donation of £1,277 from Telford Lions Club means another family will get the help they need; their daughter will be able to safely travel to all her medical appointments.”

Newlife Foundation has funded more than £10million of specialist equipment for children across the UK – 62 Equipment Grants totalling £92,955 have been in Shropshire.

Last year (2013/14) Newlife awarded 33 per cent more Equipment Grants than the previous 12-month period. Because of this the charity is appealing to ‘local heroes’ everywhere to come forward to fundraise or donate towards the cost of equipment for children in their county.
