Disabled children are among the most vulnerable, disadvantaged and least listened to in our society. Newlife’s latest report ‘Fight For Our Future’ paints a bleak picture where parents and carers are unable to meet their child’s most basic needs, as they navigate a broken system that does all it can to undermine them.

It is scandalous that in the UK, only 40% of families feel their child has all the equipment they need to live a full life and similarly 75% of professionals are concerned that children living in their area don’t have the essential equipment they need. The cost to the most vulnerable is immense. Enough is enough – it is time to ensure every child is treated with the care they are owed.

We urge the government to make disabled children and their families a priority. To do this, they should #ACTNow:

• Accelerate equipment provision  – Ensure all equipment needs are met.
• Cut waiting times –  Establish a maximum waiting time for assessments and ensure that this target is met.
• Tackle staff shortages – Increase the number of paediatric Occupational Therapists to support disabled children and their families.
