FRANCESCA’S SITTING PRETTY

Being able to take our children out and about in safety is something many of us take completely for granted. However, for three-year-old Francesca’s parents, it isn’t that simple. But thanks to a special car seat provided by Newlife Foundation, Francesca can travel safely and her parents can have peace of mind.

Francesca, who lives in Dorset, has West Syndrome a form of infant epilepsy, as well as learning difficulties, no ability to communicate or concept of her own safety.

Until recently, Francesca has been using a standard car seat, she has found it increasingly uncomfortable as she grows, resisting her parent’s efforts to get her into it, and sometimes causing them to injure their backs.

But thanks to money raised by Newlife Foundation, the largest charity funder of specialist equipment for children with disabilities and terminal illness in the UK, Francesca now has a special car seat that will not only allow her to travel in comfort, but will also ensure that Francesca’s parents don’t damage their backs.

Specifically designed with children like Francesca in mind, the car seat has support where she needs it and also has a swivel base, making it easier for mum and dad to get her into the car.

Francesca’s mum, Lorraine said, “Francesca is a big girl for her age so getting her into her seat was a struggle for us – especially doing day to day things like the school and nursery runs. The new seat has a turntable which has made a big difference for us – it’s more comfortable for Francesca and it’s better for our backs.”

She added, “Having the new seat is brilliant – life is so much easier and most importantly, safer.”

The Newlife Dorset Fund supports equipment provision for under-19s in the county area facing any significant disability, whether acquired through birth defect, prematurity, accident or illness. The website – www.newlifecharity.co.uk/dorset enables local people to find out who needs help in the area right now and highlights the support given to local families.

Newlife has already helped 94 children in the Dorset area, with equipment worth more than £120,000. But more help is still needed. Currently there are four children in your county who are waiting for specialist equipment totalling £2,475.
