RUNAWAY SUCCESS HELPS LOCAL DISABLED CHILDREN

A new local 10k event is set to become an annual favourite, after 65 dedicated runners and walkers joined in to support local disabled children through Newlife charity.

The inaugural event at beautiful Chasewater was organised by Newlife the Charity for Disabled Children. Over £3,000 was raised, to buy life changing equipment.

A fun warm-up session by Cannock based Optimal Sports Performance got runners off to a great start at the event on Sunday, July 16, where they completed the two laps around the Chasewater course. While the event was a ‘Fun Run’, Christopher Gidlow of Stoke-on-Trent, completed it in just 35 minutes.

Cannock based Briggs Equipment UK which has adopted Newlife as its charity of the year, provided route signs and bottled water for runners and Hazel Green Hampers donated a prize for the stalls. These gave the event a real family flavour, including bouncy castles, tombola and a candy hut, from Inflate n Celebrate of Stafford.

Several runners took part as individuals, but others came along as teams from local companies, including Lloyds Bank. Staff members from Newlife, based in Cannock, also took part.

Chris Fielding, Newlife’s Deputy Community Fundraising Manger, said: “Big thanks go out to everyone who supported the event and to all the brilliant runners. We have had great feedback and now intend to run this event next year on July 15, so put the registration opening of April 3 in your diary now for a chance to take part in changing the lives of local disabled children. Going forward we will be letting all runners know how their fundraising has benefitted a local child or children and aim to inspire others to help us reach our target of 100 runners next year, with an even bigger and better free family fun day.”

He added: “Right now we have 33 children in Staffordshire who need pain relieving or life changing specialist equipment, costing £80,563. We are also seeking a main sponsor for the 2018 event, so we can continue to ensure that every penny raised can be used to help a child in real need.”
